WAITARA.

BOROUGH COUNCIL. j (From Our Own Correspondent.) October 15. The regular monthly meeting of t»e Wa’.tara Borough Council was held on Wednesday last. Present: His Worship the Mayor and (*rs. Jones. Johns, Johnston, Ogle and Jaggs. The Mayor reported on the Municipal Conference, held in Wellington, which he attended. In reply to a letter from the town clerk, enquiring as to the legal position in respect to payment of an additional rate of interest on the electric light loan of £BOOO, the deputy superintendent of the State Advances Office said that as the unsold debentures had been hypothecated to the bank, there was no authority by which the rate of interest could be increased. Cr. Ogle said there was nothing for the council to do but to forward the information to the bank and await results. There was a deed in existence between the council and the bank, under which the bank had n,o legal right to increase the rate of interest. They could certainly ask for repayment on demand of money advanced on the debentures, and, failing receipt of the money, could dispose of the debentures for what they would fetch. —It was resolved to advise the bank of the reply from the Department. The Taranaki Electric Power Board inquired if the council desired to be included in the outer area of the scheme, as the board wished to expedite the preliminary work. Cr. Johns asked for some idea as to what the preliminary expenses would be. Cr. Ogle said the whole affair was terribly vague, and he could foresee a lot of difficulties in store before the thing was brought to a head. He instau. cd limited t power being found near Eltham, in which case places adjacent would use it all up. What would then become of Waitara, even if it joined the Power Board ? The Mayor, replying, said* he did not think Waitara would obtain equal benefits with other districts unless it joined the area. It was resolved that the necessary steps be taken for Waitara to join the area. The Mayor was appointed delegate to attend the next meeting of the board. The Taranaki Chamber of Commerce forwarded a resolution respecting the desirability of retaining the Waitara— Te Kuiti Road as a main artery under the provisions of the Highways Bill. Cr. Johns moved that support be given to this, and that a letter be forwarded to the Minister, urging that, the Bill be proceeded with. ! The Mayor reported that Mr. Dowsett, j the council’s engineer, had prepared i plans for the approach to the Camp Re- ! serve, via Broadway. A large amount: ' of filling had to be done, and he urged : that the staff go on with the work in I preparation for the memorial tree-plant-i-ing. The Mayor brought before the Council the necessity of painting the town bridge.—No action was taken, as the work would be too costly at present. Messrs. T. Borthwick and Sons’ application for water connections, culverts and footpaths to their workmen’s dwellings, was left in the hands of the wotks committee. • The overseer recommended that the ! taxi stand site, be removed to alongside i Mr. A. J. Kibby s, in Queen Street.—No action taken. ( The clerk presented a financial statement, showing that at September 30 the debit balaiLCX* was £3875 3s 9<l. The electric light department showed a deficit for the six months of £5O Gs 9d. LORD JELLICOE’S VISIT. At the Borough Council meeting, a letter from the Governor-General’s private secretary was read, stating that Waitara would be included in the visit of the Taranaki province. The itinerary showed that the party would arrive about 3.30 on the 29th inst and leave again at 4.45. His Worship submitted a draft programme, which is as follows: —Official reception and presentation of address on the Camp Reserve. A visit to the local bowling club’s greens. Afternoon tea at the Kaipeke tea rooms. Wivea of borough and county councillors, wives of two members of the Harbor Board and two of Chamber of Commerce, making a total of ten to be invited to participate in the reception tea. The Mayor, having interviewed the sergeant-major of the Defence staff, said ' that 12 mounted men were to be told oil to precede the Vice-Regal party, and territorials and cadets would be drawn ; up as a guard of honor on the Camp j Reserve. Other organisations and aociej Lies are asked to attend and give a fitting welcome to the King’s representative.

GENERAL. Out of 13 applications for the position of headmaster at the Waitara .State school, Mr. Swinbourn, now headmaster of the Crofton school, near Marton, was appointed. It is understood that he will take up his duties during November. Mr. H. Spurdie, who has been secretary to the Clifton Football Club for a number of years, gave over the reins to Mr. H. L. Southwell, who was appointed his successor at a meeting held last week. The Waitara Chamber of Commerce is placing before the Minister of Justice the anomaly which occurs in conducting Police Court business originating from Mokau and district in New Plymouth. A good deal of inconvenience could be saved, to say nothing of expense, if these cases were heard at Waitara. Captain Hugo, inspector of fire brigades which come under the regime of Eire Boards, inspects the local brigade this evening. At a meeting of the newly-formed Waitara Cricket Club, Mr. Ellis presiding, the following committee was appointed: —Messrs. P. Skejton. P. Fuller, Easton, W. Soffe, J. H. Kibby, Kingston, and J. Colman. Mr. P. Skelton was appointed club captain. Messrs. Easton, Kingston and the team captain were appointed a selection committee. It was decided to enter three teams, a senior and two juniors. An effort is being made to acquire the necessary gear from the defunct Freezing Works Chib. After such a successful gathering last year, the Clifton Football Club are intending to make it a still more successful one this year by increasing the prize moijey considerably. This can only be done by good financial and moral support of the townspeople. However, a start has been made town rds this end, and so far the results have been good<
