GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S VISIT.
PLANS FOR PUBLIC RECEPTION. ARRANGING THE DETAILS. Further arrangements in connection with the visit of Their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Jellicoe to New Plymouth (commencing on the 27th inst.) were discussed at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council. The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) reported that since the original programme was drawn up it had been decided tb hold the public reception (on the Friday) at the High School grounds, this being a more suitable place than Pukekura Park. Citizens will be asked to fly bunting and to observe a holiday from 10.30 a.m. till midday on the date of the reception. The guard of honor will be comprised o-f territorials, and after the ceremony the Vice-Regal party would probably be taken for a walk through Pukekura Park (via John Street). Special provision for mothers and wives of fallen soldiers will be made at the function, in addition to other accommodation reserved. If weather conditions prevent an open-air function the reception is to be held in the school assembly hall. The Education Board and all school authorities are to be communicated with requesting that arrangements be made to facilitate the attendance of the children at the public reception. On this occasion John Street will be closed for traffic, and a similar regulation will apply to the section of Powderham Street in the locality of the Clarke Memorial Hostel, where the official opening ceremony takes place on the Friday afternoon.
