The death of Mr. W. H. Thomas, a member of the first Rugby football team to visit Australia, is announced in a cable from London.

Mr. E. A. Washer, of Hawera, left by the mail train yesterday morning for Hastings, where he will act as judge at the A. and P. Show there .this week.

Mr. E. H. Andrews, chairman of the Canterbury Board of Education, is at present on a short visit to New’ Plymouth.

Mr. C. D. Sole, of Stratford, who underwent a serious operation on Saturday, is reported to be progressing sat sfactorily. Mr. A. Jupp, who for some time has been on the staff of the Haw r era branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., and who has accepted a responsible position in Honolulu, left Hawera yesterday for Wellington. Mr. C. K. Holt, who has been in charge of the Eltham post office for the past two years, has received notie-* of his transfer to Stratford. Mr. Holt takes up his duties there on December I.’ and will be succeeded in Eltham by Mr. W. H. Anderson, of Wanganui. Mr. John Wesley Butler, whose death is reported from Auckland, at the age of 5'5 years, w r as born at Farnborough, England, and came to New Zealand with his parents when a boy. He was a keen and enthusiastic bowler, being a member of the Rocky Nook Club since its inception, and holding the office of president.

■Mr. Henry Newcomen Nalder, who died at Auckland lajst week, formerly practised as a barrister and solicitor at Lyttelton. Up to 1902, when he retired, he acted as solicitor to the borough of Lyttelton, Harbor Board, Union Steam Ship Company, New Maland Shipping Company, and -Shaw, Savill and Albion Company. Mr. Nelder was over 90 years of age. Mr. Alexander Thorne, one of Auckland’s earliest citizens, died at his residence at Paget Street, at the age of 72 years. Born in Auckland in 1848, Mr. Thorne spent his life there. . For over 40 years he was engaged in legal pursuits in the office of his brother, Mr. William Thorne. He was a prominent figure in prohibition and philanthropic movements, and was always a member of the Methodist Church. He had been failing in healtli for some time past, and the end was not altogether unexpected. Miss Drew, who for many years has been a valued member of the teaching staff of the New Plymouth Girls’ High School, is retiring at the end of the year. A letter was read at the meeting of the Board of Governors last night in which Miss Drew asked to be relieved of her duties as from the end of next January. Length of service and family ties compelled her to take this coiirse. Miss Drew expressed appreciation of the courtesy and consideration always extended to her during her period of almost 28 years’ service. It was resolved to accept Miss Drew’s resignation with regret, as from January 31 next, and to place on record appreciation of her long and faithful service. The board ' also accepted the resignation of Miss Mullon, a junior member of the staff.
