HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS.

SUCCESSFUL ATHLETIC GATHERING. SHOWN WINS SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. The increasing popularity of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School is manifested by the large and representative attendance that assembles at the school grounds on the occasion of the annual sports, and Saturday, the day on which this year's sports were held, proved no exception to the rule. The weather during the early part of the day did not look too promising, showers falling until about 10 o’cioek, but thereafter it proved very pleasant, and the large crowd that attended the sports had a thoroughly enjoyable day.

A very lengthy programme was, thanks to the excellent organisation and discipline of the school, got through without a hitch, a feature being the smoothness and rapidity with which the events got off- Some idea of the task may be gleaned from th- fact that there were 49 events in tn* programme, making, with heats, a total of 112 fields to be despatched and judged. Great keenness was exhibited by all competitors, who numbered In all some 320 boys. Every scholar has to take part in some vf the athletic events unless debarred by physical infirmity, and as a result there were big fields, numbering nearly two hundred, in the open 150 and 220 yards, each of which necessitated 12 heats. So promptly did Mr. Moyes (who acted as starter) despatch the fields that each «-*ent took less than 10 minutes to run off, the judges having to be very alert, but they proved fuliy equal to the occasion. A feature of the sports was the zest with which the competitors entered into the events, and the wholehearted way tn which the runners in one heat cheered their mates in other heats to further effort. The handicapping was remarkable well done—a tribute to the committee. wh-. had certainly succeeded in bringing the boys closely together. The championship events and handicap events were run off together, this being .o'mpiified in the sprint events by putting all the championship boys in the one heat off pcratch.

The ground and Its appointments were in ffood order, but the wet weather prevailing of late had made the going somewhat dead, and was against fast times being recorded There are therefore no fresh records to chronicle. The school has been fortunate in haring had a number of cups, etc., donated for competition, additional cups being donated this year by Messrs. B. Noakes (Auckland), BeckbessInger tWaitara). and a medal by Mr. F. W. Button (Hawera).

There was very keen competition for the championships, but in the senior championship Brown proved much too good for the opposition, scoring firsts in the five events he contested.

There was a very large attendance of spec- , tutors In the afternoon, and they were enter- • tained to afternoon tea in the school assembly hall. Mrs. Moyes bad supervision of the arrangements. Music was rendered by Mrs Wood's orchestra. The school Is to be again congratulated on the success of the gathering, the arrangements beiQg absolutely complete.
