ADVANCES REDUCED.

THE BANKING POSITION. ’ IMPROVEMENT SINCE JUNE. An excess of advances over private deposits of £4,593,94S is shown by the returns for the September quarter of the six banks trading in the Dominion. A year ago the banks had an excess of deposits of £14,113,883, but this -was reduced to £2,338,596 for the December quartei\ to an excess of advances of *£5,2907610 for the March quarter, and of £8,874,492 for the June quarter. . Compared with the return for the June quarter of this year the position shows a reduction in the excess of advances by £4,280,544. The aggregate of advances and discounts is £6,345,975 less than in the June quarter, and only £921,315 more than in the December quarter, but deposits show a further reduction of £2,005,431, compared with the June total, and are now back to the level of the June quarter of 1919. The principal figures for the September and the June quarters of this year are as follow:
