ADVANCES REDUCED.
THE BANKING POSITION. ’ IMPROVEMENT SINCE JUNE. An excess of advances over private deposits of £4,593,94S is shown by the returns for the September quarter of the six banks trading in the Dominion. A year ago the banks had an excess of deposits of £14,113,883, but this -was reduced to £2,338,596 for the December quartei\ to an excess of advances of *£5,2907610 for the March quarter, and of £8,874,492 for the June quarter. . Compared with the return for the June quarter of this year the position shows a reduction in the excess of advances by £4,280,544. The aggregate of advances and discounts is £6,345,975 less than in the June quarter, and only £921,315 more than in the December quarter, but deposits show a further reduction of £2,005,431, compared with the June total, and are now back to the level of the June quarter of 1919.
