PROTECTING THE FORESHORE

THE POSITION AT EAST END. RAILWAY DEBARMENT’S ATTITUDE. During September the New Plymouth Borough Council conferred with the district engineer of railways with a view to the Railway Department co-operating with the council in preventing further erosion of the foreshore from the railway reclamation works to the Henui river. Touching on the above subject in his monthly report, the New Plymouth general manager (Mr. F. T. Bellringer) states:—’Phe district engineer made it clear that he was not in a position to commit his department either directly or indirectly, and further that his department were not affected by the erosion of any part of the foreshore referred to, with the exception of that immediately fronting the East End reserve. Tn regard to this the Railway Department would only be affected at a later date in the event of further erosion taking place. Discussion was therefore confined to this phase <>f the question, and it was finally decided that the borough engineer should submit a scheme for preventing the erosion there. The council will then submit definite proposals for the consideration of the department.
