PEACE IN PACIFIC.
JAPAN AND AUSTRALIA. DENIAL OF DANCER. SPIRIT QF FRIENDSHIP. By Telegraph.—Pres* Assn.—Copyngnt. Tokio, Oct. 13. Lord Northeliffe’s statement, cabled to th® London Times on October 3. in which he was quoted as warning Australia of th# danger to its unoccupied areas from a northern Power, has aroused the Japanese Foreign Office. On its behalf Baron Ijuji stated:— ‘‘Perhaps it is improper to express an opinion without reading the complete text of Lord Northeliffe’s statement. Although he studiously and seemingly cautiously avoided direct reference to Japan, the general tone indicates that he tried to picture Japan as a menace to Australia. If by the teeming millions that he fears would overwhelm Australian Anglo-Saxons he means the Japanese, if by the ambitious, covetous Power which some day might become Australia’s enemy, he means Japan, such a statement, coming from a person of Lord Northeliffe’s influence must not be passed over lightly. Goodwill and friendly spirit on Japan’s part towards Australia has been cultivated under the Anglo-Japanese alliance. There is no room for the alienation of this spirit. Japan has not looked towards Australia as a possible outlet for her surplus population. Japan realises the importance of maintaining good relationship -with Australia for the peace of the Pacific, for which Japan has not spared any effort.”
