METHODIST CHURCH.
QUARTERLY MEETING. The quarterly meeting of the New Plymouth Circuit of the Methodist Church was held on Tuesday evening. The Rev. W. J- Elliott, superintendent, presided, and in addition to the Revs. J. F. Martin and John Nixon, there was a good attendance of officials. Before the business of the meeting was taken, the chairman referred to the life and work of the late Rev. William Cannell, and a suitable resolution was placed .upon the records. The membership and Sunday school returns were presented by the Rev. J. F. Martin, and disclosed a very healthy state, good progress having been made in several directions. The Foreign Mission Fund came under review, and the chairman re;>orted that the amount raised by the circuit lor the present year constituted a record, and gratification was expiessed. Home mission matters received due consideration. The balance-sheet was presented by the circuit stewards, and revealed a very satisfactory income for the quarter. Very cordial invitations were extended to the superintendent minister, the Rev. W. J. Elliott, and his colleagues, Rev. J. F. Martin and J. Nixon to continue their ministry in their respective churches, and were as cordially accepted. Messrs. A. Ambury, C. Carter (circuit stewards) , and J. Gibson were appointed represents lives to the annual Synod, winch meets id Hawera on November 14, and Messrs. M. Barnitt, A. Coutts, and A. E. Haynes were appointed the substitutes. It was stated that th.; ex-officio members of Synod were Mr. R. Pepperell (seereary of district church property), and Mr. J. T. Griffin (S.S. District Committee). After consideration of Sunday School and centenary matters the meeting terminated with devotional exercises.
