LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. HARD FIGHT IN FINAL. > By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Oct. 11. The final of the ladies’ golf championship commenced at Heretaunga in drizzling rain this morning, when over the first round of 12 holes Mrs. Guy Williams (Masterton) led Miss M. Payton (Auckland) by 1 up after a great struggle. The course was heavy, corsequently favorable for Mrs. Williams. Mrs. Williams won the first three holes 4 —5, 4—6, 3—4. At the fourth hole she was laid a dead stymie and the hole was halved in 5. —Mrs. Williams 3 up. Miss Payton won the next holo in 3, just missing for 2. The sixth was halved in 5. Tie seventh went to Mrs. Williams with 5 to Miss Pay ton’s 7. The eighth was halved in 6. Mrs. Williams gave up the 9th hole, driving into the creek, and at the turn was 2 up. rlfygpj At the 10th hole Miss Payton played a beautiful approach and the hole was halved in 4. At the lltfci hole Miss Payton was laid a dead stymie and lost the hole, 5—6. —Mrs. “■Williams 3 up. Miss Payton recovered at the 12th and reduced the lead by winning the hole. Finishing the first round of the course Mrs. Williams had the more powerful drive, but was out-putted at the later stages. Mrs. Weston won the Rattray Cup for th 3 best aggregate in bogle matches. STRUGGLE TO THE END. VICTORY FOR MRS. WILLIAMS. Wellington, Last Night. Tie final of the ladies’ golf championship, played to-day between Mrs. Williams (Masterten) and Miss Payton (Auckland), proved the closest match seen for many years, and splendid golf was played. The contestants were all square at the last hole. Another bole, the 37th, was played, ar/d Mrs. Williams won. Lady Jellicoe presented the prizes. The weather was execrable, the players being six hours In the rain, LADIES’ UNION MEETING. Wellington, Oct. 11. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Ladies’ Golf Union the election of ten new clubs was notified, the number affiliated now befog 60. It was resolved to unake the limit of handicaps for competitors in the championship twelve, instead of fifteen; to appoint a committee to go into the. question of handicaps, the managers to play an inter-island match in future on the day preceding the tournament, and to open the latter on a Friday.
