THE HILL-CLIMBERS.
MOTORISTS AT OKOIA. INTERESTING COMPETITIONS. The increasing popularity of the motor was strikingly exemplified on a recent Saturday when about 1500 interested spectators gathered at the Okoia Hill to witness a number of interesting hill climbing competitions which had been arranged by the Wanganui Motor Club. For the hill climbing tests the locality was well chosen, the course being nine-tenths of a mile, with several sharp bends and a grade in places of one in eight. Competitors started on the flat at the junction of the Matarawa and Okoia Hill roads, and in the early stages had a straight run. After a few hundred yards it was steady climbing all the way to the top of the hill, with some difficult corners to negotiate. It w T as a course more than sufficient to try the nerve, skill and judgment of competitors and an acid test of the reliability of the respective cycles and cars which took part. The most popular vantage point was half way up the hill, and from there the competitors could be watched practically all through their journey. It was here the official time-keepers took up their position and the tests were directed with flag signals, the officials keeping in touch with both the starting and finishing points.
The working out of the car results necessitated the services of a mathematician, and in that respect Mr. E. Stanley Closs, A.M.1.M.E., rendered valuable service. MOTOR CARS. The outstanding feature of the trade and taxi car climbing tests was the success of Essex cars, which got first, second, third and fourth places, also the fastest time.
