PUBLIC WORKS.

APPEARANCE OF STATEMENT. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Oct. 7. The late commencement of the Parliamentary session may delay the appearance of the Public Works Statement. This is a matter of importance to local bodies, since it may reduce the time at their disposal for ihe expenditure of money voted to them in public works estimates. Mr. .1. R. Hamilton (Awarua) asked in the House yesterday if the Minister would bring down the Statement as early as possible, in order that the local bodies might take advantage of the summer months for the expenditure of their money. The Minister replied that the statement waa being prepared now. He could not

say exactly when it|would reach the House, but all possible expedition would be used. Mr. Masters (Stratford) : “It makes a lot of difference to local bodies.” Mr. Coates: “Yes, and it makes a lot of difference to members of Parliament, because as soon as it ia down they clear off and that is the last we see of them.” (Laughter.)
