BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
NEW PLYMOUTH COUNCIL. HYDRO-ELECTRIC WORKS. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor, (Mr. F. E. Wilson), Councillors J. V. Griffiths, T. N. Blackball. W. Rumball, E. Dingle, R. L. Parkin and J. Brown. An apology for absence was received from Cr. R. A. Large. The work at Mangorei during tha past month was reported on. by the resident engineer (M. R. L. Pearless) ; under date October 6: — Tunnel A.—This heading has been extended another 327 feet, making a total distance driven, of 751 feet. As in-» strutted, this ' portion, has b6en driven with an invert level suitable to the smaller sized, tunnel, the tapered sec- • tion adjoining the lined, portion, of the tunnel. All timber on hand, was used up and driving stopped on the 30th. Tunnel B.—Preparatory work is being done at this point and timber cut on borough property to enable a commencement to be made with driving. As the , approach, to this heading passes tkrough an old slip considerable work will be necessary before any actual headway is made with the two tunnel drives.
Tramline. —Formation is now completed to “B” tunnel, And is being continued through Neilson’s to “D” near forebay. Rails for this work and for tunnel are now in New Zealand and expected on site shortly. Turning wall. —Foundation was prepared and a commencement made with the erection of concrete core wall. Lining of portion of small tunnel has also been completed. In connection with turning wall a, further portion of No. 1 water race will be excavated. General.—The number of employees to date is 00, practically the whole number being accommodated on the works. No. 1 Contract.—Throughout the month work here has been confined chiefly to the carry forward of the concrete lining. Total length now lined, 1663 feet. WANDERING STOCK. A complaint to the effect that a number of horses were frequently allowed to wander in Fulford Street was received from Mr. F. Tonks. He pointed out that some time ago, in response to a request from him, the council had caused the portion between Dawson and Mt. Edgecombe Streets to be put in order, but the wandering stock was responsible for the patJis being cut up again. The inspector reported that the locality ‘had been under surveillance by Inspector King and himself, but they could not be there always. It was decided to inform Mr. Tonks that he was at liberty to personally impound. any horses if he found them wandering on the street. GENERAL.
The tender of the Dunedin Engineering and Steel Co. for the supply of pipes for a new pipe line at the hydro-electric works was accepted, the price being £2089.
Permission was granted to the New Plymouth Boys’ High School sports committee to use, for their, annual steeplechase on 20th inst., the same portion of the borough property at Waiwakaiho as had been included in the course during the past three years. A letter was received from Mr. J. R. Cruiekshank directing attention to a previous complaint lodged by him ifi reference to the flow of stormwater from the racecourse and John Street into his
property in Ridge Lane. The council decided to defer decision pending an inspection of the locality being made.
