NEW SUGAR PRICES.

RATES FOR WHOLESALE LOTS. AUCKLAND AND THE SOUTH. ALLOWANCE FOR FREIGHT. The wholesale price of sugar under the new contract between the Government and the Colonial Sugar Refining Company has been fixed at £35 10s a ton to merchants and manufacturers in Auckland, and £34 a ton in southern centres. The price in Auckland is. £l2 a ton less than that under the old contract. In fixing the southern price et £34 a ton it was estimated that freight, wharfage cliarges and incidental costs would bring the landed cost up to the Auckland price. The recent increase in freights from 24s a ton to 26s 6d a ton for general cargo from Auckland would leave 3s 6d a ton to meet handling charges. Merchants handling orders in excess of four tons and manufacturers using in excess of two-ton lots will draw their supplies direct from the Sugar Company, and others handling not less than half-ton lots are to deal with merchants appointed as sub-distribu-tors. The price in these instances will not exceed the Auckland wholesale .price, but the sub-distributors are to receive 3| per cent, commission, compared with 2i per cent, under the old contract on all sugar sold by them, the conditions of sale being subject to the purchaser being granted a half per cent, cash discount on payment within 14 days of delivery. Tradesmen ordering less than half-ton lots will have to pay £3B 5s a ton, this price, which has yet to be sanctioned by the Board of Trade, being considered necessary to cover the cost of distributing smaller quantities. This will also be subject to a cash discount for prompt payment, which will be almost equivalent to the discount on halfton lots, when the incidental expenses in connection with distribution are taken into account.
