CHAPLIN AND CHILDREN.
PERFORMANCE AT RITZ. London, Sept. 20. A deputation of East End children I approached the Mayor of Shoreditch, who thereupon telegraphed. to Mr. Charles Chaplin, the cinematograph actor, that a deputation of 50 children was coming to call on him. They proceeded to the Ritz Hotci, aboard an omnibus. On arrival there they were told that the actor was asleep, but was getting up to receive them. Mr. Chaplin soon emerged from Ins private sitting-room, and was immediately surrounded. He was presented with flowers and ! letters of greeting, one of which, from • the boys, said, “You were once a poor London boy, but you are now a gentleman. All gentlemen smoke cigars.” The boys presented him with a box of cigars. Air. Chaplin donned his overcoat ana bowler and performed antics without his famous boots. He spoke patter to the enraptured children, till the waiter summoned him to breakfast.
