TROUBLE AT TE KUITI.

MAYOR AND COUNCILLORS. An allegation that corruption was creeping into the affairs of the Te Kuiti Borough Council, made by the Mayor, Mr. H. Hine, at Monday’s meeting of the council, was retracted at the adjourned, meeting held on Friday. Mr. Hine made a complete apology, and invited the councillors to resume their seats. The councillors accepted the Mayor’s apology and prepared to resume business, but the town clerk, Mr. F. E. Lamb, intimated that the five councillors who had resigned following the Mayor’s allegations could not legally withdraw their resignations, and that the meeting could*not therefore proceed for want of a quorum. He stated that as returning officer he had called for nominations to fill the five vacancies. Mr. Hine contended that one resignation which was subject to his apology was cancelled by the retraction of his former remarks, and this gave him quorum. The town clerk refused to read the minutes or submit the correspondence on the ground that the procedure was Illegal. He then left the meeting after having locked up the correspondence.
