MATERNITY MORTALITY.

REPORT TO BE MADE TO PARLIAMENT. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Oct. 6. A question regarding the rate of mortality in maternity cases was put to the Minister of Health (the Hon. C. J. Parr) to-day by Mr. E. Newman (Manawatu). Mr. Newman said he understood that the Minister was obtaining a report from the department. He would like to know if his report were ready, and what were its contents. The Minister said that the department had gone into this matter. It was true that American statistics showed a rather serious state of things in New Zealand. They disclosed that New Zealand was all but at the top of the list in deaths in childbirth. The Board of Health had taken evidence on the matter, and a sub-committee consisting of Sir Donald McGavin and, Dr. JS. Elliott had also been working on it. Their report, which had been drafted and signed, would be brought before the Board of Health in the nexT few days. He hoped that the board would be able to deal with it during the next week or two. There were a great many recommendations of importance, whicli he hoped to present to the House.
