WHAREHUIA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The bazaar held to raise funds for the building of the social hall was a great success. The day being fine, the attendance' both afternoon and evening was very good. Everybody worked with a will, the nett results handed to the secretary of the club being £273, which constitutes a record for the work of six Weeks. The art union for picture and cushion amounted to £Bl 17s, proceeds from socials £26 18s, and bazaar £l6 4s sd. The stall holder’s amounts were as follows: —Fancy (Mrs. A. Forbes) £33 18s, plain (Mrs.' C. W: Phillips) £2(5 ss, produce (Mrs. H. Wheller) £24 ds 3d, tea and hoopla (Mrs. G. gangster) £22 Ils 4d. handkerchief and doyley (Mrs. L. V. Smith) £l7 4s 2d, school stall £l4 Ils Bd, lolly (Mrs. L. Vivian) £6 7s 2d, flower (Mrs. Hogg) £6 Is Gd, bran tub (Mrs. J. Webb) £4 Is 6d, chain stepping (Mr. Reg. Wellington) £3, shooting gallery (Mr. Bowman) £2 19s 3d. football £l' 17s, sundries £1 3s 2d.’ The concert in the evening added greatly to the enjoyment of all. Rogers’ orchestra gave selections, and Mrs. T. Gibbs and Miss Black sang. The hall is to be officially opened by Mr. R. Masters, M.P., on Friday, October 28, when a grand concert and dance will be held.
On Tuesday night, September 27, Mr. Wood, of the Government Stock Department. at the request of the local farmers, delivered a most instructive lecture on “Farm Medicine” in the Wharehuia social hall. At the conclusion of the address, Mr. Wood answered numerous questions, touching on subjects important to stockmen, and mor.e particularly dairymen. Mr. S. Hart (in the chair), in voicing the thanks of those assembled, expressed a sincere hope that Wharehuia settlers v >uld soon have the opportunity of hearing Mr. Wood again. On Friday. September 30, the mothers of the pupils of Stanley school, entertained the local teachers at an afternoon in the social hall. Mr. Bell (chairman of the school committee) spoke a few words of welcome and appreciation, songs were rende. <1 by Miss 'Fotbes, Mrs. Forbes, Mr. T. Bell’ and the school children, and recitations were given by Rawea, Mclver, and Edna Lash.
