Mr. Watson, manager of Chillagoe, Limited, giving evidence at the inquiry into the Mount Mulligan golliery disaster, said.he heard a loud report and saw smoke issuing from the main tunnel entrance on the morning of the disaster. This was followed by another explosion. The heavy volume of afterdamp prevented an immediate entrance into the tunnel. When it retreated he went into the pit and found Evans’ body a hundred yards along the tunnel, smothered in dust. O’Grady was - found a little farther on. Evans was insensible, but recovered consciousness and tried to explain where the entombed men were. The inquiry was adjourned.
