ALLEGED CEMENT TRUST.
A TOPIC IN PARLIAMENT. VIEWS OF MEMBERS. By Telegraphy—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The allegations by Mr. R. Masters (member for Stratford) of the existence of a cement combine were referred to by several speakers during the debate on the Address-in-Reply in the House to-night. Mr. W. D. Lysnar (Gisborne) condemned the Hon. E. P. Lee’s attitude on the cement 1 controversy. The contention that what the companies did was not illegal could not be held to cover that it was right. He all along contended that the Government should have taken to themselves greater powers under the Commerce and Trusts Act, and now it was clearly seen that the scope of the Act should be extended to cover all such commodities as cement.
Mr. R. P. Hudson (Motueka) declared that the arrangement come to between the companies was a great disaster to his district, and if combination was not legally a trust then he regretted the Government had not the power to make it so. Mr. L. M. Isitt (Christchurch North) said he hoped the Government would fully inquire regarding the effects of the socalled combine’s action.
