THE BY-ELECTION.
AUCKLAND EAST SEAT. CANDIDATES MENTIONED (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Oct. 5. The resignation of the Hon. A. M. Myers, member for Auckland East, was announced formally to the House of Representatives yesterday. The Speaker read the letter that ne had received from Mr. Myers, conveying his intimation that on medical advice he had decided to vacate his seat. The House was not called upon to take any action in the matter at that stage. It is reported in the lobbies that the Government candidate for the vacant Auckland seat may be Mr. Clutha Mackenzie. It will be remembered that Mr. Mackenzie was a candidate for the Auckland East seat at the last general election, and on that occasion he polled fairly heavily. It is stated that the Hon. G. W. Russell, who was one of the Liberal members of the National Government, and who lost his seat at the last general election, will appear as a Liberal candidate. There is some ground for believing that a candidate representing the Progressive Liberal and Moderate Labor Party will also be in the field. A Labor ‘ candidate is expected.
