turf topics. (By “Moturoa”.) Races at Hastings to-day. Waverley weights are due to-morrow. Stylish Lady appears to be worth following. Weights for the Wellington spring meeting should appear on Saturday. Bebehead, a likely runner at Kurow to-morrow, is a half sister to the A.J.C. Derby winner Cupidon. Sasanof was an odds-on order when he ran second to Heathersprig on Saturday, and his backers collected only a few shillings in the pound. In one little town I know the Bar Vons are looking for .the person who wired Raffle through as a “moral” for the Hack Hurdles at Napier Park. The dividend was a beauty! Rose Pink, the aged daughter of Kilbroney and Madder, has been retired from the turf, and will be mated with Royal Stag this season. If the Government is as hard up as the Acting Premier stated, there seems no sense in rubbing out a club like Avondale, which contributed £6379 to the public funds over its recent meeting.

Salrac, winner of the A.J.C. Breeders’ Plate, is a colt by Woorak —Sal. Bellami and Limestone, who filled the minor places, were both sired by Lin acre. Beauford’s victory in the Epsom Handicap would be a body blow for the ring, the Beau Soult —Biueford gelding’s form at Rosehill and Randwick making him a very warm favorite. . The layers would get some of their own back by the defeats of David and Syce Knight in the Metropolitan on Monday. The winner, Laddie Blue, is an aged bay gelding by Sir Laddo —Sky Blue. Still Sea’s performance at Wanganui was not one that would suggest that he would be an odds-on favorite at Greenmeadows, but money talks —and talks correctly at times.

At latest Sydney advices Furious was voted a “moral” for the A.J.C. Derby, and Harvest King, Popaway and Braehead were also more fancied than Cupidon. At Rosehill on September 17 most of the Derby candidates met in the Guineas, nine furlongs, the favorite (Furious) winning easily from Braehead (Mountain King—loli), with Pelaw Main third. Cupidon, who was second favorite, cut up badly, and finished eighth. If Tamatete or Grotesque go to the post for the Hawke> Bay Guineas they will carry 9.3, which includes a 71bs penalty. At ths weights the better of the Steadowned pair, Mermin and Radiant Light, might keep the opposition busy. Then there is The Hawk.

Scotch Mixture is still running seconds, but his turn cannot be far off. He :s trained at Hastings, and will possibly do better on his home track.

Molyneaux is in such great fettle at present that wise punters, whatever else they know, will not let him run against them —financially, of course. Others that appear to be worth following are Anomaly and Mountain Lion.

The ifi-and-out form shown by Cupidon and Coniston on the other side, together with the upset of the New South Wales idol, Furious, would make Cupidon’s Derby victory anything but popular. At all events it is another crown in “Dick” Mason’s halo.

Particulars of Epitaph’s defeat in the Avondale Stakes show that the winner, Lady Lois, had the bulk end of the luck that was floating around. Lady Lois drew No. 1 at the barrier, and was first away, while Epitaph was eighth out, and was interfered with by several inside when the tapes lifted. Lady Lois had an uninterrupted run on the rails, while Epitaph had to be hard ridden to get into second position two furlongs from home. There was little between them at the halfdistance, but the effort to get up settled Epitaph, and though she finished gamely under the whip, Lady Lois won a great race by half a length. Danube had the opportunities granted to few stallions at the stud, but in spite i of mating with highly-bred mares he failed to leave anything of his own class. The best of his progeny so far appears to be Molyneaux, who has won three good handicaps this season, and last year scored four firsts and mopped up £1440 in stakes. CUPIDON AND BEAUFORD. Cupidon, the winner of the Australian Derby, is practically a seasoned horse. He is nothing to look at, being an ordinary made bay gelding, but his redeeming feature is his action, rs he gets over the ground with the minimum of trouble, having that low style of galloping that in the good old* days was called “ a daisy cutting.” Cupidon was bred by Mr. I. G. Duncan, and is by Martian from Bebe, by Bezonian from Blue Water, by St. Leger from Sapphire, by The Drummer. Bezonian died last year, and he was a beautifully bred horse, being by Velasquez from Gas, by Ayrshire from Illum'nata. It is almost unnecessary to give Martian’s breeding and from "the tabulated pedigree it will be noticed that Cupidon has a double cross of Doncaster, Hampton and Mar; caron, while on the dam’s side he has

the valuable Galopin cross, so it is little wonder that he gallops well. Prior to last Saturday week Beauford, who won the Epsom Handicap, had proved himself a sprinter of class, and after his brilliant Tramway Handicap win, those people who doubted should be convinced. His win then was a great performance, as he made good time, and with 9jB on his back made some of the 'best sprinters look like a lot of hacks. Beauford is not a picture to look at, beiqg rather a leggy brown gelding, and there is nothing about him to excite one’s admiration. He has rather a poor neck and is light in the barrel, but he has improved ir. appearance since he last raced at Randwick, and to a large extent has lost that mean appearance. Beauford is very much inbred to St. Simofi, as his sire. Beau Soult, is by Soult (son of St. Simonj from Our Lady, by Simmer, also a son of St. Simon, while his dam, Blueford, is out of a paternal grand-daughter of that great stallion. Most students of breeding would consider the inbreeding too close. Beau Soult was a great galloper, and won good races, but, unfortunately, i was a hard horse to train, and did not ido a, great deal of racing. He has not had much of a chance at the stud, anti it is rather a pity, as he was a very fine horse, and from a breeding point of view is hard to fault. Beauford’s dam, Blueford, is also the dam of Kenilford, who won several races and was sold to go to the East. Blueford is by True Blue (Hotchkiss —Rose of Wellington) from laisford, by Simmer from Isis, by Goldsbrough from lona, by The Barb,
