JERSEY CATTLE.
KEEN DEMAND CONTINUES. f'' NORTH TARANAKI BREEDERS’ SALE, SOME BIG rr -n KS. The demand that exists throughout, the Dominion for good sires of uroved butterfat production to place at the head of dairy herds, with a view to improving the butterfat production—and, incidentally, the reputation that Taranaki lias of being the home of the Jerseys that can fulfil that qualification—was manifested by the very large and representative attendance at the Taranaki A. and P. Show Grounds yesterday, when the annual sale of pedigree bulls, the property of North Taranaki -Jersey breeders, was held. This sale had attracted an entry of’ 155 bulls, all the best known breeders being represented, and it drew a very large attendance, buyers being present from all the districts of the North Island and parts of the South Island. Complete arrangements had been made by the auctioneers (Newton King, Ltd.) for the conduct of the sale, which was held in a spacious seated marquee. Luncheon was served in the Agricultural Society’s luncheon room, the catering being controlled by the Bell Block ladies, and it was up to their high standard. Mr. K. F. Kirk, relieved by Mr. It. Cottier, wielded the hammer, and both
were in good form. As the bids came freely, particularly for anything bred on butterfat lines, they quickly disposed of the lot listed for the day. Some 88 lots fell under the hammer, realising just under 5000 guineas, an average of £59 5s per head. As this included some calves, and also a number of youngsters in poor condition, •it must be considered an excellent result.
Top price was realised by a beautiful yearling bull, Viola’s Golden Noble, by Viola’s Golden Laddie —Noble Queen, who was purchased by A. and J. O'Donnell, the well-known South Taranaki breeders, for 220 guineas. A 20-months bull, Peggy’s Noble Aster, by Hollybank Squire—Lady Peggy, submitted by Mr. E. Griffiths, also went to South Taranaki at 210 guineas, G. Cowling being the purchaser. Other yearlings by Viola’s Golden Laddie also realised high prices, being purchased respectively by: A. H. Gilbert (Lepperton). 180 guineas; D. Watkins (Auckland), 160 guineas; D. L. A. Astbury (Mangatoki), 115 guineas; J. Rae (Whakatane), 110 guineas; W. R. Coburn (Westland). 100 guineas. The eight submitted by Mr. E. Griffiths realised a total of 1175 guineas. Mr. H. Esmond Greig, of Pukearuhe, sold a two-year-old by K. See 7th, which realised 135 guineas, and a yearling by Tiny’s Little Swan brought 125 guineas, the former going to Mangatoki and the latter to Rahotu. Mr. ,G. H. Bell received 130 guineas for a two-year-old by General Noble, which was purchased by Mr. E. J. Kirkwood, of Stratford, whilst a couple of yearlings by Snow View’s Knight also realised 100 guineas, and both remain in Taranaki, one‘going to E. J. Cannon (Urenui) and the other to A. Sorenson (Eltham). Another yearling to bring three figures was cne by Beachland's Commander, submitted by Mr. Salway, realising 114 guineas. It was secured by Mr. J.
