WORKERS’ EDUCATION.

NEW PLYMOUTH ASSOCIATION GREATER INTEREST WANTED. A meeting of the committee of the New Plymouth branch of the Workers’ Education Association was held on Monday evening to consider he financial position of the asraociation and to elect a delegate to the proposed council meeting to be held in Wellington in December. The canvassers reported that they had met with a generous response to their appeal to the public, but that they were still short of the sum required to be forwarded to the general secretary!. The chairman (Mr. Dempsey) referred to the poor attendance of the members of the class, notwithstanding the excellence of the lectures and of the discussions that followed. An opportunity was given to the public to attend, but was not generally taken advantage of. Various ways and means of popularising the movement were discussed and a suggestion was made that the president and secretary early next year wait upon the different organisations in the town and point out to them the benefits of having such an association in the community, with a view t$ enlisting sympathy. The secretary mentioned that one business man had offered to expend a certain sum in buying tickets for young men wishing to become rownbers and willing ta attend regularly. Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., was appointed delegate to the conference, and it was decided to ask him to use his best endeavors to get the University Senate to establish university extension lectures in New Plymouth.
