PUKEKURA PARK.
MEETING OF THE BOARD. PROGRESS OF WORK. The Pukekura Park Board met last night. Present: Messrs. C. E. Bellringer (chairman), R. C. Hughes, W. C. Weston, V. Griffiths, W. Short, H. Dempsey, A. T. Moore and P. Stainton (secretary). Leave of absence was granted to Mr. H. Ford. The chairman reported that the general work of the park had gone on well, maintenance being well forward. The question of the fernery would be dealt with very shortly, and another matter to be undertaken was the removal of some dead trees that spoilt the view down the valley from the racecourse. During the flowering season, with all the spring blooms out, practically none were picked, which was a very satisfactory feature. In spite of the fact that very large crowds had been attending the sports ground during the football season the terraces had come through very well, and he was pleased to notice the manner in which the park had been preserved. SUNDAY COLLECTIONS The question of collections being permitted at the park on Sunday was raised by Mr. Hughes, who remarked that there was a former understanding that no collections were to be made The matter arose out of the recent band concerts. The chairman said he hardly thought that any previous agreement could be binding on the present board, and in regard to the recent recitals he thought the fact that there were large attendances showed that the public were willing to contribute in such cases. Mr. Hughes thought that the matter should be carefully considered by the board, and he expressed his intention of giving notice of motion to be dealt with at next meeting. He agreed that the recent recitals resulted in very pleasant gatherings, but the point he desired to raise was whether people should bo allowed to make money out of it. The chairman said he was personally opposed to any private individual being given the right to mak« a collection, out a puulic institution, such as the band, was not on the same footing. It was subsequently agreed that the question of collections be reviewed at the next meeting of the board. During the discussion the question of evening concerts was referred to, and the chairman said he hoped a series would be arranged for the coming summer. GENERAL. In view of the popularity of the lake as a swimming pool last season, it was decided that this year the bathing shed, which has been used for storing tools, be cleared and made available for bathers. A tender for the rights in connection with the tea kiosk at the park was accepted, subject to conditions to be drawn up by a sub-committee. It was decided to erect a number of direction posts at various points of interest in the park.
