The Sydney Morning Herald, commenting on the Derby, says many racing men contend that geldings should not be eligible for Derbies, and there is good ground for such argument. The Derby race should decide the best three-year-olds of the year, and should be fought out among the colts and fillies of the time. If the owner considered his colt first-class he would not geld him. The best three-year-olds should be capable of reproduction, thus maintaining certain strains.
