TOWNSHIP SENSATION.

THREAT OF TAR AND FEATHERS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wairoa, Last Night. The Arcadian quiet of Wairoa was disturbed on Saturday night by an unusual occurence, which, but for the timely arrival of the police, might have culminated in a tragedy. It appears that a certain colored man had been paying attention to a married woman. Something got abroad, and on Saturday night the Lothario got a bad handling from about a hundred residents, mostly leading people. Threats of tar and feathers or a ducking from the Wairoa bridge were about to be carried into effect when the police stopped proceedings. No further action is likely, but the gay Lothario is expected to put a good distance between himself and the incensed residents. There was a sequel early this morning, when North Clyde residents were startled by a loud explosion, which was heard a mile away. Investigation showed that an attempt had been made to blow up a travelling pie shop, supposedly owned by the negro. Only the floor was burst up, but the residents were greatly alarmed. As it happens, the vehicle is owned by a local taxi owner.
