The first match was between Watersiders and Railway, and provided a very willing and fast game. Both sides contained some well-known ex-players, Watersiders, captained by Frewin. the ex-Taranaki rep., having the advantage in this respect. They owe their victory to .the superiority of their rear division. Though there was a margin of 11 points between the two teams, there was hardly that between the teams on the day, as the Railway got steam up on several occasions and nearly scored, and it was not until the final 20 minutes that the Watersiders put the issue beyond doubt. In the fir-t twenty Watersiders scored two tries, Arnott and F. Broughton getting over from nice passing bouts. In the next twenty minutes Betts kicked a penalty for Railway. In the final twenty minutes a great passing bout between i Frewin, Broughton and Sturmey saw I the latter sail for the line, passing to > Arnott, and the latter scored his second try. Civil Service rushed play to the other end, where Malcolmson was beaten by the dead-ball line. Then H. Hoffmann tried ■ip pot, but the ball was forced. A moment later, however, off-side play enabled Ennis to land a beautiful goal.
