SOCIETY OF ACCOUNTANTS.

THE ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Taranaki branch of the New Zealand Society of Accountants was held at New Plymouth, on Friday night, Mr, V. Duff presiding. The annual statement, showing a credit balance of £2 19s 7d, was adopted without discussion, Ttfe following committee was elected: Messrs. IT. P. Burdekin (Hawera), W. Power (Stratford), J. S. S. Medley, V. Duff, F. T, Davis, and B. Andrews. Mr. E. H. Tribe was appointed auditor.

Messrs. Burdekin and Power raised the question of holding occasional meetings in South Taranaki, with the idea of inducing members in that d’strict to take a more active interest in the society, and it was eventually resolved, as a recommendation to the committee, that if possible general meetings be arranged in both Stratford and Hawera, and coinciding with the committee meetings.

The branch’s representative on the New* Zealand Council (Mr. 11. Baily) gave a resume of the business transacted at the last meeting. He said investigations had been made as to the p.os tion of the society on the question of readmitting members of the society who bad been guilty of irregular conduct during the time they were out of the society. The ruling received was that they had no power to decide as to the conduct of a man while he was not a member.

Some alterations had been made with regard to the papers for the examinations, and the council was receiving sympathetic help from the University Senate. There was a difficulty, however, in getting men to undertake the position of examiner, A notice of motion had also been tabled recommending that the accountancy preliminary examination be abolished, the trend of Ahe university opinion at present being to make matriculation the entrance test for every profession. The society was considering the question of instituting a scholarship scheme. Mr. Baily remarked that in discussing the question of lectures, the council was of opinion that much help had been received from various addresses, and it was likely that they would adopt a suggestion that some of the best lectures be printed and circulated amongst members. A resolution was carried putting forward for the consideration of the committee a proposal to institi’te a students’ society in conjunction with the 'branch.
