TARANAKI IRONSAND.
SUCCESSFUL EXPERIMENTS. MAKINGS OF BIG INDUSTRY. Auckland, Sept. 30. Recent experiments in England in connection with Taranaki ironsand were witnessed by the Prime Minister during his stay there. “What has been done,” he stated to a Dominion representative, “solves the problem of smelting ironsand; there is no doubt about that. Whether electricity can be obtained cheap enough to make an undertaking a commercial success remains to be seen. With plenty of electricity available at a cheap enough rate iron can be produced from the sand at a profit. Whether anything can be done before additional power is obtained from, say, Arapuni, I do not know; but with power there is the makings of a big industry on the Taranaki coast.” In replying to a deputation regarding the Arapuni hydro-electric station, Mr. Massey said it had a bearing on Taranaki ironsand. “The problem of successfully smelting Taranaki ironsand has been solved,” he said. “There is no doubt about that. I saw it myself, but if there is a difficulty, and I believe there is, it is that they haven’t got sufficient power in Taranaki and it will have to come from Arapuni.”
