THE DEATH PENALTY.
REPRIEVE FOR MAORI SOUGHT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A petition for the commutation of the sentence of death on Hakaraia Te Kahu has been placed in the hands of a member of Parliament, and it is stated that as many more signatures are coming in, the Government will be asked to grant a reprieve in order that the matter may be reviewed. The petitioners contend that Te Kahu probably shot Elliott accidentally, and draw attention to circumstances connected with the death of Elliott which support this contention.
