Mr. F. J. Hill, who visited England with the New Zealand bowlers, was due to arrive at Auckland yesterday by the Niagara. At a meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council on Thursday afternoon a resolution of sympathy was passed with the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wilson) in their sad bereavement.

Mr. G. T. Murray, inspecting engineer of the Public Works Department, has been temporarily appointed resident engineer to the Nelson district, vice Mr. 3- H. Reaney, who has retired from the service.

Messrs. J. S. Connett, E. Walter, and J. B. Murdoch, chairmen respectively of the Taranaki, Stratford, and HaweTa County Councils, returned by the mail train last night from Wellington, where they have been attending the annual Counties’ Conference.

The death occurred at her parents’ residence, Blenheim, last week, of Miae Marjorie Mary McCallum, only daughter of Mrs. and Mr. R. McCallum, M.P. Miss McCallum was 24 years of age, and for the last three or four years had been a medical student at Dunedin, where she became seriously ill about ten months ago.

The golden wedding was celebrated at their residence, 105, Kelburn Parade, Wellington on Friday, of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Hutton, who were married at Patea on September 23, 1871, by the Rev. W. C. Oliver. Mr. Hutton was at the time Postmaster at Patea and was the father of the late Mr. C. C. Hutton, solicitor, of Wanganui, and Mr. G. H. Hutton, of Inglewood. Mr. A. L. Kenrick, manager of the Waihi branch of the Bank of New Zealand during the last 20 years, and who lias been transferred to Inglewood, was farewelled at a public function held u the Borough Council Chambers on Monday afternoon. The Mayor (Mr. I). Donaldson), presided, .handed Mr. Kenrick a puree of sovereigns and a gold-mounted pen on behalf of the numerous subscribers. The Mayor said that i the most striking testimony to Mr. Kenrick’s popularity was the desire, shown by one and all to participate in the movement to make him a presentation.

At a meeting of the council of the Taranaki Acclimatisation Society yesterday a presentation was made to Mr. W. J. Bell in recognition of his splendid work during the past few months at the society’s new trout hatcheries at Pukekura Park. The presentation took the form of a special high grade Hordy’s fishing reel. In making the pesentation the president made special mention of Mr. Bell’s sportsmanlike action, pointing out that without his aid anglers would not have had such a fine liberation of fish in all the streams of the society’s territory this season. Mr. Bell suitably responded, stating that next year he hoped to get even better results fgrom the hatcheries, and it would afford him much pleasure to give his bests efforts on the society’s behalf.

On Saturday last there died at her daughter’s residence, Pnpat< toe the wife of Mr. John Nodder. for about fifty years stationer in Pollen Street, Thames. About four years ago the couple celebrated their golden wedding in Auckland. Mrs. Nodder was a daughter of the late Simeon Howell, of New Plymouth, and had reached the age of 76 years. She was for a long time a very useful member of the Methodist Church and always took an active part in the temperance movement.
