BOXING.

MEETING IN AUSTRALIA. NEW ZEALANDERS WELCOMED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright,. Received Sept. 29, 10 p.m. Sydney, Sept. 29. The visiting Australasian amateur boxers were tendered a civic reception. Mr. A tack, manager of the New Zealanders, replying, claimed that New Zea. land’s record in past years was extra fine, considering the handicaps under which visiting teams suffered. Home teams always had the advantage in drawing upon their full resources. The New Zealand team is as follows: Bantamweight.— R. Purdy (Auckland. Featherweight.—M. Hatton (Auckland ). Lightweight.—E. May (Auckland). Welterweight,— L. O’Neil (Greymouth). Afiddleweight,—-K. O. Aleale (Auckland). Heavyweight.—B. McCleary (Christ- I church), FRENCHMAN DISQUALIFIED. London, Sept. 28. Following enquiries into Balzac’s contest with Battling Siki, the French boxing authorities disqualified the former tor unjustified abandonment and deprived. him of the French and European middleweight championship titles and suspended him for three months. THE ELTHAM ASSOCIATION. The Eltham Association’s receipts for the past year were £744 and the expenses £709, leaving a credit balance of £35. The value of the assets is £B4 above the liabilities. The annual report states: "It is to be regretted, in the interests of the sport, that professionals seem inclined to have an inordinate idea of the value of their services as attractions to the public—and the public has to pay. The Taranaki Provincial Council made a move in the direction of limiting professional contests to a purse of £lOO, but it is quite obvious that until this rule is instituted by all associations we snail • have to pay larger purses to secure the services of popular men, owing to the competition between local associations. ! It is questionable whether professional * contents tend to the advancement of the ; amateur side of the sport, which, as the New Zealand Council points out, is the main object of local associations.
