NORTH TARANAKI HUNT.
A meeting of the committee of the North Taranaki Hunt Club was held, on Tuesday evening.
A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded the Taranaki Jockey Club -for the use of its course and appointments for the recent rnce. meeting.
The gate ste’a. ds submitted a list of complimentary tickets wrongly used by local residents, and it was resolved that the names be' aeJeted from the complimentary list, and that the racing clubs in Taranaki be notified of the persons who had wrongly transferred their tickets. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Races at Geraldine to-day. Napier Park meeting on Saturday. Active should get amongst the winners . short ly. The Quin Abbey gelding Quiniro was shipped to Sydney last week. Both Detroit and American Beauty paid upwards of a score at Otaki. Foo Chow, Pit Prop, Mandrake and Kilfane should run prominently at Geraldine. Helen Rufus is a beast at the post, and was left standing at the peg each, day at Otaki. Molyneaux returned two fine dividends* in distance events at Avondale, but unfortunately is not engaged in the New Zealand Cup. Scotch Mixture, by Heather Mix'ture —Tapora, is a good sort, of a horse, and his two seconds at Wanganui forecast a win shortly. ,
When Danger Zone paid the big dividend at Wanganui his party threw in for a big win, their Takings off the tote running into four figures, it is said. They put in hot and strong on The Hawk on Saturday, and nothing but a bad start could have beaten the Martian gelding. However, the unexpected happened. and the bookies breathed freely once more.
It looks any odds on a Martian winning the New* Zealand Cup. Of the 44 left in 14 were sired by Martian, and four of the last five winners were by the Martagon. horse. Epitaph beat all but Lady Lois in the Avondale Stakes, and ran right up to her private reputation. Perhaps she : will do better in the Hastings Stakes next week.
War Loan was mainly responsible for Ruddy’s defeat at Wanganui on Saturday, and the Zimmerman gelding should win a decent hurdle' race shortly. Rational’s defeat in the Avondale Guineas caused some consternation, and from the report of the race it appears as if the Taranaki horse was made rather much use of, his rider evidently being obsessed with the almost general opinion that the gelding was unbeatable. Further improvements are being completed at Haweta, the start at the mile and a quarter post being graded and otherwise improved. The Hawera course is now one of the safest in the Do-
minion. , ... Mr. Ted Penman has persevered witn old Detroit for a long while, and ne was very sweet on the Frisco geldmg» chance at Otaki. Nobody begrudged either owner or horse the win, whicn was a handsome one. It is safe to say that a big share of the tote money went to Bulls punters, who were well aware of the good work the veteran had been doing. . . n Militaire, with George Clarke m the saddle, was made the medium of a mg punt on the first day at Otaki, hpt Lie good thing came undone, the ngbrtyweighted and significantly-named Notawede beating the favorite home by a smile. , , , Another “can’t lose” tip that P rov '~ false was Cleasanta, which had every chance, but was easily outpaced by tne consistent big dividend payer, B e J°^ d - The latter was turned out in great iettle by F. Carmont. Away from the course there w,as lot of money for Solfanello on Monday, and Ken Duncan’s fine sprinter won from end to end in the easiest possible manner, and returned a price w u ‘ was likely to give the layers all tne symptoms of gastric influenza! Alan McDonald continues to ride Winners over sticks and country, ana • easily the headiest horseman m ms class on this coast. His handling • Omahu at Wanganui, and Ore ore a Otaki, was perfect. There is art in < ■things; even in dissecting a craynah.
