JERSEY CATTLE.
A VALUABLE ANIMAL. IMPORTED FROM CANADA. Mr. F. W. Cornwall, of Bell block, one of the beat-known breeders of pedigree Jerseys in New Zealand, and one of the Dominion’s foremost judges, imported from Canada some months ago a young bull which will be a very valuable addition to the ranks of our Jersey sir?s. He was bred by Messrs. B. H. Bull and Son, Brampton, Ontario, and is just two years old. Brampton Merry Boy by name, he is by Brampton Radiator (Brampton Stockwell J unr.—Brampton Stockwell Rad) out of Brampton Merry Princess (Viola’s Bright Prince—Brampton Merry Daisy). He was therefore a particularly fashionably bred bull and at the same time comes from heavy producing families. Brampton Merry Boy is a very stylish youngster. He has a good head piece, face well dished, a bold, prominent eye, with ample width between. He is also strong in muzzle, a point which, generally speaking, denotes constitution, and which in this case is amply borns out as one casts one’s eye further over the bull, for he has great girth room and depth and spring of ribs. He is also very wide across the thigh and well split up behind. Altogether a very attractive youngster. Mr. Cornwall has a choice lot of young females to mate with Brampton’s Merry Boy, notably Oakland’s Princess, undoubtedly one. of the most typical young Jerseys in the Dominion to-day. She is really a picture, and is also a great performer Then there is Oakland’s Primrose and Oakland’s Sweet Nell, other quality animals, and also heavy producers. In fact, Mr. Cornwall’s herd is quality all through and judging by the. fine calves he already has by Brampton Merry Boy his choice of a new sire has been .< happy one. Brampton Merry Boy’s sire Brampton Radiator won first prize at Toronto in the senior calf class in 1915, second as a yearling at Toronto in 1910, first as a two-year-old in 1917, and second aged class 1918. In the same year he won first prize for threo-year-old bulls at the National Dairy Show, Columbus and headed first prize in the aged herd class at the national show, while in 1919 he won, first prize and the grand championship at Toronto. He is also sire of winners and several of his heifers have made tests and records, while Brampton Stockwell junr. has several heifers qualified in the yearly test. Brampton Stockwell, sire of Brampton Stockwell junr. is qualified for tested daughters in the Canadian Record of Performance yearly test and is a son of Old Stockwell who sold for over 10,000 dollars at public auction and from Mon Plaiser’s Fanny the grand champion cow of Canada and medal winner in butter tests as were also six of her daughters. Brampton Merry Princess, dam of Mr. Cornwall’s bull, was put on yearly test when she dropped her first calf and gave over 301 b of milk to start with. She is a daughter of Bright Prince, and her dam Brampton Merry Daisy gave 91771 b of milk and 5881 b of fat as a four-year-old in 361 days, calving again within thirteen months of calving at start of test. From a breeding standpoint and also a producing standpoint Brampton Merry Boy is good enough for any herd in the country while his individual merit speaks for itself.
