ORGANISING TEACHERS.

THE NUMBER TO BE REDUCED.

FIRST CLAIM TO BACK-BLOOKS. The report that it is propo®ed to re* due© the number of organising teachers has aroused much concern in Taranaki, especially in the back-block district*. Mr. W. G. Reid, secretary of the Taranaki School Committees’ Awociation, recently telegraphed to the Minister of Education strongly urging that action be withheld pending the hack-block settlers being consulted, and the Hon. C. J. Parr has forwarded the following reply: “I feel sure there need be no apprehension a® to organising teacher® being taken away from the back-blocks. The proposal is to reduce Taranaki number® from four to two, and the whole time of these two organising teachers is to be given to the baek-binck districts and untrained and uncertificated teachers. The proposal is to secure a fairer and more even distribution of the organising teachers. At present two di«trirts (Taranaki and Wanganui), which, compared with the other districts, are relatively small, have more organising teachers than the others. The Director of Education and Chief Inspector of Primary Schools, after careful investigation are quite satisfied that the weak teachers in Taranaki, mostly in the back-block districts, can be fully catered for by two organising teachers and the ordinary inspectorial staff which also visits these schools twice a year. The impression conveyed to you that the department has ordered drastic and auto* crastic and immediate action is quite wrong. The attention of the Taranaki Board has been called to the matter and it ha® been aeked to remedy the position. A full statement will be made to Parliament in a few days.”
