TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Glorious spring weather prevailed on Saturday for the Wanganui J.C. meeting, and the crowd rolled up in force, but the money wasn't there. Nice, handy fields, with keen competition, failed to tempt a “broken” public to bet freely, and the totalisator “slumped” a further fifteen thousand, making the decrease for the meeting £28,235. Nevertheless, the club had a good meeting, and, as already stated here, it is a good sign when sportsmen realise that the present is not the time for extravagance, and wisdom calls loudly for moderation in all things. (The only things that may be used ad Jib; cost nothing, and count for less, are the sporting scribes’ superlatives. So hang the expense!) Punters began badly, the fifteen runners in the Railway Hack Welter presenting some difficulties. Projector, wn had been specially Drought up from Bulls for the second day, was a slightly better favorite than Tolerance, and then came Scotch Mixture, Quest, Kinaand Malingerer. The rest were paying a score or more. Quest and were first away, and led into the strain i J- from Scotch Mixture, Warpath an e Danger Zone, the latter coming fast. 1. Quest was the first to get a puncture, r- and then Projector blew out, leav'in* Scotch Mixture in front. The last-nam
ed looked all over a winner, but Hockley brought Danger Zone along with a pretty run and took it off him by a narrow margin. Warpath, who hung on well, was a close third, with Quest, Tolerance and Mort Avis next. When it came to the allow down it was found that the Hawera crowd had cleaned up the pool, while those behind Projector and Warpath had Just good (stable) money. The winner’s performance was a good one, but it appeared as if Scotch Mixture might have won with a more vigorous rider aboard. Warpath is a good colt, and Tolerance was not disgraced. Projector is a fine looking gelding, but not quite up to the class met with at Wanganui. Mort Avis ran a fair race, and may do better later on, and Yolande went well for a bit Neither Generous nor Erie were ever in the picture. All started in the Debutante Stakes, and nothing but Viyella (Absurd — Snooze) would suit backers. Beilina (Panmure —Bonheur), Prosperity (Boniform—Peace), and Uncle Alex (Bezonian—Bonny Helen), also had limited support. The favorite dashed off in front, and won easily from Bumptious (Kilboy—Conceit), who took a long while to get on his feet, but finished fast. Waltea (Kilbroney—Coronata) was close up third, followed by Beilina and Pirouette. Viyella’s victory was as simple as that of Rational, who opened his winning account in this race last year, and she is undoubtedly a fine filly. \
The Eclipse Stakes drew six runners, the only withdrawal being Trespass, who was reserved for the Higgie Handicap, Vagabond being the elect of the Kemball stable. Amythas, on the strength of his first day’s victory, was rightly judged to have come back to hia best form, and was sent out at a Gloaming “price.” Rouen, with A. Reed in the saddle, had a big following, and Listowel, Rude, Vagabond and Maioha were backed in that order. The rß.ce proved the moral that the betting suggested, but backers of the favorite must have perspired freely during its running. Listowel led off from Rude, Amy* thas and Maioha, with Rouen last. Along the back Listowel was half a dozen lengths clear of Rude, with Amythas next, the pace being fast. Half a mile from home the favorite commenced to make his run, but Listowel was still three lengths in front entering the straight, and was going strongly. it appeared as if McFlynn had taken the Absurd horse too cheaply, but Amythas wa-s not done with yet. With a magnificent, sustained effort he crept up. and fifty yards from home was level with Listowel. The latter held the champion for twenty yards, but. the favorite (all out), struggled on in the gamest possible fashion and won by little more than half a length. In the battle for supremacy between these two fine horses the others were almost lost sight of, but Rouen finished well, a re- , speetable third, with. Rude. Vagabond . and Maioha following in that order. ’ Amythas undoubtedly had one of the j hardest races of his career, but pulled through as only a champion could, and ' the crowd was not slow to recognise the ' brilliancy of his performance. Listowel, ; who nearly upset the hot pot, also came in for a fine reception, and he is i certainly a greatly improved horse this f season.' Rouen ran well, considering the bad start he got, but the performances of the others were mediocre.
The five carded for the Gonville Hack . Hurdles went to the post, and there was little between Simon and Ruddy ' when the machine closed. Ruddy again . attempted to win from end to end. but 12.4 was the biggest hurdle he to . get over, and War Loan, and later on Simon, worried him badly. Simon headed Ruddy before turning for home, and ran in an easy winner from War Loan, with Ruddy ‘(well beaten) third, and Tarquin fourth. The Press Association wire, placing Ruddy second, was not correct. , A nice field of six—all good ones lined up for the Marangai Steeples, with First Line, Omahu, Tigerlantl and Mattock in most demand. Mattock was early in the lead, but fell at the brush over a mile from home, leaving Tirau, Tigerland and Omahu in the picture. Omahu headed Tigerland in the last round, but had to be ridden right out to catch the better jumping Tirau, who only succumbed after a stirring race home. Master Strowan carried his 12.2 into third place, with First Line, who never seemed to be able to go the pace, .■ a. poor fourth. The three miles were i run in Grain. ssec good “go.” f I Vagabond was the only absentee ! from the Higgie Handicap field, leaving five runners. Trespass was a strong order, with Tame Fox and Cruceße next best. From a poor start Tame Fox and Isabel drew out, but along the back Crucellc was rushed up to Tame Fox, | and the pair came into the home i stretch just in front of the favorite. Crueelle -cracked lup, tout Tam'e Fox hung on well, and Trespass had to be hard ridden to beat him in the run to the post. Crueelle, who was badly handled, was a poor third, just in front of Kareao. The winner was ridden a well-judged race by A. Orrell, a recently imported ’Stralian jockey. A big field lined up for the Moutoa
Hack Handicap, with Halcyon, Velociform, Ben Bolt and The Reaver best backed. Penitent was quickest away, but was steadied after a couple of furlongs, and the field ran in a bunch to the straight, the names of Halcyon, Velociform, Ben Bolt, Penitent, and
Explorer being called. A great race home resulted in Penitent’s favor by a neck from the little fancied Explorer (who paid more than the winner), with Ben Bolt a similar distance away third, and The Reaver and Velociform almost in line.
Punters went for a recovery on the final event, the Gwen Handicap: Mustard Pot, The Hawk, and Simonides all running into four figures, with Thespian next. The start was a wretched one, Thespian being first away from Simonides and Mustard Pot, with The Hawk in a hopeless position. Thespian was never headed, and just struggled home in front of Missgold, who came from a long way back, with The Hawk right up third, followed by Mustard® Pot and Simonides.' With anything like a decent send-off The Hawk would have won on the bit.
On the whole the starting at Wanganui was indifferent, and the results in consequence are not to be relied upon in future forecasts. The meeting was another triumph for the Absurd progeny; Mireusonta, Tamatete, Viyella and Thespian winning races, while four seconds were also credited to the imported sire. On the first day Wanganui’s premier band, whose instrumental music has always been a. feature of Wanganui meetings, were placed behind the grandstand, and hardly anyone knew they were there. Needless to say the bandsmen objected to such treatment, and were later installed in their usual prominent position. Winning jockeys were: O. McCarten, J. Barry, A. McDonald, A. Reed and A. McFlynn 2 each; H. Glmour, M. McCarten, H. Burt, J. Hockley, S. Walls, A. Orrell and P. Rayner 1 each.
