STARTLING FIGURES.
VENEREAL DISEASE CASES IN WELLINGTON. The doctor in charge of the clinical department at the Wellington Hospital, in his monthly report to the board last Friday, stated that during August there was an increase in the. number of new cases of syphilis, seven of which were males and three females. Of the male eases, four were recent infections and three old ones. All cases were attending regularly and are responding to the treatment given them. The cases in the ward were also progressing satisfactorily. In the gonorrhoea section there were twenty-four new male cases and two female cases reported—all recent infections—and each was making good progress. For August the total treatments of out-patients and in-patients for syphilis and gonorrhoea at the hospital were: —Doctor, 779; attendants, 2740. In respect to syphilis cases there were 236 old cases of males receiving attention at the end of August, seven new ones, and 72 patients received 202 treatments from the. doctor, while 36 old cases in respect to females received attention and three new ones, and the doctor gave 20 patients 85 treatments. Of the total number of gonorrhoea cases treated, there were 104 old cases of males; 25 new'cases were seen; 288 treatments by doctor and 1748 by attendants; 10 cases in ward; 7 admitted during month; and 7 discharged. Twelve old cases in regard to females were attended; two new ones were seen; and there were 51 treatments by the doctor.
