AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

THE BASIC WAGE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Melbourne, Sept. 28. Sir Joseph Cook expressed entire agreement with Mr. Justice Power’s basic wage judgment, but the dominant feeling in trades union circles is disappointment that wages have not been increased. Some officials voice the opinion that, in view of the unsatisfactory result of arbitration, the unions might decide to abandon court proceedings. CHURCH UNION. Melbourne, Sept. 26. The joint inter-State Committee on church union, after considering numerous amendments to the proposed basis of doctrine and policy, has concluded. There were 80 amendments, 23 on doctrine and 57 on policy, and about half of these were adopted. Remarkable unanimity was reached on the debatable points after discussion. FEDERAL ELECTIONS. Perth, Sept. 26. In the Legislative Council the Minister of Education introduced the Electoral Act Amendments Bill, which permits State members to stand for Federal elections without resigning their seats. He declared that the action of the Federal Government in barring State- members could be made legally effective only by an alteration of the Federal Constitution. This Bill was an assertion of State rights.
