Just. prior to the sailing of the Quest, Mr. McLeod, a member of the last Shackleton expedition, visited the ehip find signed on as a member of the expedition. , . Shackleton, in a special article in The Times, explains the economic importance to the Dominions in the Southern Hemisphere of the two broad lines of research to which the expedition will devote ita energies, namely magnetism and meteorology. The correction of errors of the magnetic compass and the charts baaed thereon are highly important in these days of fast steamers. The total taving in time and money will be enormous th'rough more accurate charts. Acrurate meteorology in the Southern Hemisphere depends on the knowledge of the Antarctic weather. The furnishing of the fresh knowledge thus acquired with the assistance of wireless to the stock-rawing Dominions will enable the fanners and breeders to know the weather ahead. Shackleton also hopes to lay down lines for the development of atr services.
