PENSIONS AND CANTEEN FUNDS. A MISSING RECEIPT. By T®l*graph.—Press Association. Wellington, Sept. 26. The executive of the R.SJL discussed the question of increased peiuhone. It was suggested that Mr. Massey be interviewed on his arrival in Auckland, and it was decided that a deputation should wait on members of Parilament on Wednesday. It was pointed out that, the deputation would have to be prepared for the question was money to be raised. Some members had their own ideas about this. One thought it was ridiculous to attempt to suggest a method of finding the money. In the end it was decided to confer further and invite suggestions on the subject. There was a discussion on the canteen funds, from which dt appears that the only expenditure was for writing regimental histories. Mr. Batten stated that the board committee was committed to this and the commitments might coat £lO,OOO. General Russell said more likely £15,0'0. } Mr. Batten proceeded to say that the main portion of the fund of £70,000 was invested in Government debentures at 4 per cent., but when he asked where the debenture was, said he did not know. The debenture was taken out before he joined the board. Some members criticised the position thus revealed, and asked for a receipt for the money, but this was not forthcoming. Eventually the secretary read a letter from the Minister of Finance, stating that the money was lodged in the Treasury at call.
It was decided to ask the Canteen Board to supply full particulars regarding the investment.
