The results threw little light no the forthcoming Randwick spring meeting. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) When Cupidbn won the Novice Handicap at Randwick he only repeated the dose served out in the same race last year by Vespucci, who also carried Mr. G. D. Greenwood's colors. Cupidon had not previously raced, but his track work at Randwick had been very promising, though suffering by comparison with that of his brilliant stablemate, Gloaming. Cupidon took charge entering the straight, was well clear at the leger; and won nicely by a strong neck—a margin that might have been increased if desired. The winner was bred at Waikanae, and was bought as a yearling by Ah’. Greenwood for 525gns. Coniston started in the Novice Handicap also, but following the ’Straliun principle, was not bracketed -with his stablemate. Cupidon carried five times the number of tickets that were registered on Coniston, so that the stable's money was probably on the right way. Coniston, though unplaced, also ran a good race, and may turn out more than useful. Sydney state that Rational’s full-sister, Veil (Absurd-Cowl), is easily the 'fastest two-year-old in training at Rand wick, and this youngster is. likely to show up in races restricted to that class at the AJ.C. spring meeting, which opens on October 1. Veil cost a thousand guineas as a yearling, and three times that amount would not buy her at the present moment. Frank Wootton went to Ireland to ride in July, and at Tuam was successful in Uie two races in which he figured in that country. He won a hurdle race on Mr. Vigorous (3 to 1 on) and a three miles steeplechase on Yours Only (5 to 2 on). In the last-mentioned race VV'ootton’s mount was blocked at the last fence, and ho was nearly run off altogether. On pulling up there was a row between him and the jockey who caused the trouble. Wootton, believing the interference intentional, used nis whip on him. A talkative jockey is liable to do all sorts of mischief (says a contemporary). A case of the sort came under my notice not long ago. A certain horse was quietly fancied by its owner, wiio TranK Jy told his friends that he thought he had a chance. The horse ran and finished nowhere. If it had won it would have paid close on £l5. The rider, in describing the race to the owner the same day, said that if he had not go; boxed-in the would have won, and added that the horse could not lose on the second day. Unfortunately this opinion was delivered with so much emphasis that it was heard by a bystander, who, when the horse’s next race came on.
planked about .£250 on to the machine and whe? l this horse won he paid less than £3.
Hector Gray is probably doing a little too well in England to please some, of the other riders in that country. At least, the following comment by the Special Commissioner of the. London Sportsman relative to the protest against Spear wort after his win in the Summer Ibindicap at Newmarket, lends itself to that idea: “To. my mind — and I saw all the concluding stages of the' race very clearlyit was singularly wrong for either t’arslake or ShatWe.li io object to the winner, who was in his proper place near the rails all the way. and only code them off in self-defence, when all the seven drawn on the left of him converged as if wishing to squeeze him out. lie would beat them again and again, lei them meet never so many limes, but, as Marsh said, as the jockeyall camo bum-hing their mounts together near the foot of the hill, ’Why on earth can't they ride home straight on a straight course?’’ Gray, on Spearwort, finished exactly in his true course, and I saw Holbeach, on the near side, try to savage him; but what on earth ’Shatwell had to complain about, seeing that he was drawn No 4, and should have been nowhere, near 7 and 8, 1 do not pretend to understand.” STOPS BRINGING HOME LIQUOR. “My husband used re bring home over 10s worth of liquor every Saturday night. 1 am so glad he is improving so much. Drinko Rowdens are wonderful.’ Save your loved ones from rhe curse of drink. Drinko can be given secretly ■f denired. Odourless, tasteless. No ill after efi'eut-'. Write for free booklet. All correspondence strictly confiden: ial. Plain sealed envelopes used. .Address, Lady Man-ag.’i’. Drinko Proprietary, 212 A.( Lambton Quay, Wellington. Don’t be a killjoy Rad and sour! With a fresh complaint for every hour, Grieving and grudging each price yon Whining' a peevish life away. Urgent requirements are. worth their cost. Doing without them is money lost, Never a cough or cold endure, Always take Woods' Great Peppermint Cure. Tackle that fin-ah eold in the head by inhaling freely “Nazol.” Also take n few drops on loaf sugar, and allow the sugar to dissolve very slowly by placing it between the cheek and gum. 2
