“INFERENTIAL FALSEHOODS”

MR. HOLLAND HAS A GRIEVANCE: An article contributed to the centenary number of the Manchester Guardian by New Zealand’s High Commissioner (Sir James Allen) was the subject of a question put to the Leader of the House of Representatives by Mr. H. E. Holland (Buller). The leader of the Labor Party said that in this article the inference was made that the party did not stand for constitutional methods. Would the Minister undertake to give instructions to Sir James Allen that his office was not to be used for the purpose of publishing inferential falsehoods of this kind? The Speaker objected to the form of the question. He thought that the member should not make suggestions of that character. Mr. Holland: I will put it this way: Will the Government instruct Sir \James Allen to refrain from political propaganda while he holds the office of High Commissioner? The Speaker again indicated disapproval. The Hon. D. H. Guthrie asked that 'the question should be placed on the 'Order Paper. He had not seen the ar•ticle, and would be glad if Mr. Holland would let him have a copy.
