THE ARBUCKLE CASE
CHARGE OF MURDER. INCIDENTS AT THE PARTY. By Telegraph.—Press Asin.—Copyright New York, Sept 23. As Arbuckle was being taken into the Police Court at San Francisco for the preliminary hearing of the charge of murder, he said to the reporters: “I was not drunk at the party in my rooms. I did not harm Miss Rappe, and I am able to prove it.” Judge Lazarus ordered that seats in the court-room should be reserved for women only. Two physicians, Shelby and Oppuls, who examined Miss Rappe’s body after death, declared that external force had caused death. The arms were bruised. One Witness, Semmas'h, who was present at the party, eaid that Arbuckle, in a prank, applied ice to Miss Rappe’s body without any intention of causing harm. Rowell Sherman, who was also present at the party, made a deposition in New York, denying that he heard Miss Rappe charge Arbuckle with having injured her. DEFENCE RECEIVES SET-BACKS. EVIDENCE AGAINST ARBUCKLE. Received Sept. 25, 11.5 p.m. San Francisco, Sept. 24. The defence of Arbuckle has suffered serious set-backs. The prosecution obtained a statement from Seminacher regarding what Arbuckle said concerning Miss Rappe after the incident, which was of such a serious nature that it was made privately to the judge. The prosecution also exhibited Miss Rappe’s shredded clothing, which made a visible effect on the spectators.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
