IRISH PROBLEM.
REPLY FROM BRITAIN, EXPECTED NEXT WEEK. INDEPENDENCE REFUSED. By Telegraph.—Pres# Assn.—-Copyright. Received Sept, 23, 7.25 p.m. London, Sept. 23. The Daily Telegraph says the British reply to Mr. De Valera has now been drafted, after Mr. Lloyd George had consulted all his colleagues. Therefore it represents the considered judgment of Cabinet No Cabinet sittings are expected until the first week in October.
The Gairloch correspondent of the Daily Express understands that Mr. Lloyd George’s reply to Mr. De Valera states, in unmistakable language, that unless the «laim to Irish sovereignty is definitely abandoned there cannot be a conference. The draft is being sent to all members of the Cabinet, and Mr. Lloyd George expects their comments on Monday, when a reply will be sent to Dublin. Mr. Lloyd George’s draft is in no sense an ultimatum, but should prevent futile correspondence.-—Aus.-N.Z, Cable Assn.
