BANKING RETURNS.

AN IMPROVED POSITION.

REDUCTION OF ADVANCES. It is generally expected in financial circles, a Wellington Times representative was informed on Thursday, by one well able to judge, that the next quarterly banking returns, which will be published shortly after the end of this month, will show an improved position—that is, in the substantial reduction of advances, this being the result of the restrictive policy which it was found necessary to impose some months ago.

At the same time these returns, it is believed, will show a greater decrease in the amounts lying to the credit of current accounts, this being due to the profitable employment of money in debentures and other forms of advances. Many people who had money lying idle have found good investments in the securities indicated.
