ACCIDENT TO BIMETER. By Telegraph.—Press .Assn.— Copyrlgit. Sydney, Sept. 22. Bimeter has ended his racing career by breaking a fetlock while racing at Kensington. He is receiving veterinary treatment | with a view to saving him for the stud. It is understood that Mr. Lowe's chief reason for withdrawing Lord Martian and Insurrection was that the former had not made the progress anticipated. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Races at Ashburton to-day. The Wanganui meeting concludes tomorrow. Avondale races on Saturday and Monday. All Bulls was on Ceimisia in the Durie Haek yesterday. Palmerston sports rolled up to Wanganui in big numbers, and Taranaki was also well represented. Rational, re-handicapped to carry 8.12 in the Avondale Flying, is now assessed as a 41bs better horse than Mermin.
Admiral Codrington is reported to have gone on the right way since winning attractively at Marton, and should run very prominently an the Avondale Cup to-morrow. According to a Melbourne paper, the “freak’’ horse, Eurythmic, can not only stay any distance, but is capable of reeling oil three furlongs in 36sees., or better, any old day in the week. Some horse!
Once again Gloaming has struck trouble on the other side. This time it is influenza of a severe type, and the gelding’s throat was so badly affected that the chances of his being raced at the early spring meetings are very remote.
A Palmerston scribe states that the cross-country horseman H. B. Lorrijran, has finished his career as a race rider. One of Lorrigan’s collarbones has been injured several and permanent disablement in this quarter has caused him to throw up the game. Loyal Irish wae a hot favorite for the Spring Handicap, run at Rand wick on the 10th inst., but could only finish eighth. It is said that the New Zealander was badly interfered with during the running of the race. At the same meeting Lord Martian was sent out favorite for the Novice Handicap, but could only finish fifth. The winner turned up in Cupidon (Martian — Bebe), who was ridden by A. G. Weaver, who claimed 71be allowance. Cupidon was always in the leading division, and scored by a neck from the second favorite, Prince Sandy. Cupidon’s performance has brought him into the betting for the AJ.C. Derby, for which Furious is a strong order.
Golden Cello, a four-year-old daughter of Montecello (imp.) and Golden Slipper, ■sprung a rturprke in the Welter at Tattersail’s Club meeting, the runner-up being Peroration, bj’ Kilbroney —Flowery Speech, so that the event had a distinct New Zealand flavor.
At latest Sydney advices lEurythmic, David and Tangalooma are favorites for the Melbourne Cup; Tangalooma, Tavistock, Violoncello and Syce Knight for the Canefield; Beauford, Greeastead and Elfacre for the Epsom; David, Syce Knight, Salitroe and Fairy Bob for the Metropolitan; and Furious, Harvest King and Cupidon for the A.J.C. Derby. Loyal Irish has apparently igone right out of favor for the latter event.
