COAL MINES DISPUTE
A SETTLEMENT PROBABLE.
TERMS NOT ANNOUNCED. (By Wire.—Parliamentary Reporter. Wellington, Last Night. A settlement of the coal dispute i® probable. Representatives of the Mineownere’ Association and the Miners’ Federation have completed a draft agree* ment and if this agreement is confirmed the trouble that has been threatening will be averted. The terms of the proposed settlement will not be announced in the meantime.
It will be remembered that the Miners' Federation presented demands including a six-hour day, a five-day week and the abolition of the contract system. The mine-owners refused to consider these demands and stated that they intended to revert to the old system of district agreements. The Federation, since then, has virtually withdrawn the extreme demands, but has pressed for a national agreement, and it is on this point that the dispute lately has hinged. The draft agreement is now being referred to the various Miners’ Unions for their acceptance or rejection.
