UNREST IN INDIA.
ENGAGEMENT WITH REBELS. MILITARY AND POLICE CLASH. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —copyright. Received Sept. 22, 1.10 a.m. Delhi, Sept. 21. A column engaged and heavily defeated. Moplah rebels at Sullidmala, two miles westward of Karavarakundu. Our casualties are believed to be nil, and theirs are unknown.
The rebels broke up into two parties and dispersed, but they are being pursued. The leader, Variaukunnath Kun Kamad Haji, who recently proclaimed Ernad and Wolluvanad Khilafat kingdoms, is reported to be with one of the fleeing parties. A collision occurred at Chakrata between British troops and civil police, arising out of a quarrel between troops and a fruit seller, in which the civil police intervened. One soldier was killed and a British officer and one soldier were wounded, while a sub-inspector and a police constable were killed. All Is now quiet.
AGITATORS ARRESTED. REPRESSIVE ACTION OVERDUE. Delhi, Sept. 20. Dr. Kitchlaw and other prominent Kalifate workers have been arrested and charged •with tampering with the loyalty of the troops. This was followed by indignation meetings of non-co-operators, but quiet was maintained. The native papers suggest that a new reign of repression has begun, but it is generally considered that action against the Ali brothers and other agitators htte been long overdue. Reports from Malabar describe a number of minor engagements. At. Manerji the rebels attacked the troops, but were repelled and ten were killed. It is officially reported that the military situation has improved.
Gandhi, in an interview, declared that the Moplah outbreak was a powerful setback to non-co-operation.
