PRICE OF BUTTER.
ANOTHER REDUCTION POSSIBLE. The retail price of butter in Welling ton has been reduced by id per lb. this week in consequence of the fall in tht london price. First grade butter is now costing 2s 4d per lb in the shops, and other grades are selling at 2s 3d asd 2s 2d per lb. If London prices do not recover shortly it is anticipated that there will be another fall in the local retail price (says the Dominion). The export value of butter on the latest London quotations m less than 2s per lb at New Zealand ports. “The fall may be gratifying to some of the housewives,” said a merchant, “but it is far from being a good thing for the Dominion. Butter and cheese have got to support New Zealand this year, and every person in the Dominion has an interest in seeing the beat prices possible obtained by the producers. It is to be hoped that the decline in London is merely temporary.”
