LABOR DAY SPORTS.
The New Plymouth Sports Committee contemplate at the end of the football season (after the Taranaki-Auckland match) making considerable alterations and improvements to the sports ground in Pukekura Park, which will include the ploughing up of the grodnd, levelling, re-sowing, etc. This will necessitate the ground being closed for public functions for a considerable period. The Labor Day Sports Committee, although having engaged the grounds for October 24, has decided to forego the booking, thus enabling the improvements to be commenced almost immediately. This will cause the Sports Committee ; to effect slight alterations to their pro- ' gramme, but considering the urgent necessity of altering the Recreation Grounds ■ and the permanent nature of the imi provements and general facilities for the ' 1922 Labor Day sports meeting, the committee trust the public will approve of their action and give general support to this year’s function. In order that none of the cycling or running events arc to be curtailed the committee have decided to hold the sports meeting on Western Park, the only suitable ground for such events apart from the Recreation Grounds. The Western Park Board are co-operating with the committee, and the grounds are to receive special attention. A glance at the programme on page 1 of this issue will convince competitors and the public generally that, instead of being a modification of last year’s programme, it is in fact a big improvement, it being the committee’s aim to continually improve the programme until the meeting will rank amongst the foremost in the North Island. The meeting will be registered under the N.Z.C. and R.U., and this ought to iiuiuce the best performers in Taranaki to compete, in fact, cyclists from Eltham, Tariki, Kaponga, Stratford, besides those locally, are already in training. Canvassers for support in the way of trophies, etc., have met with considerable success so far, and further offers of support are promised. Competitors will note that entries for al] the big events close with the secretary on February 15. Anyone desiring the full programme or further particulars will be supplied with same upon application to the secretary, box 193, New Plymouth.
